First Book

Each month, WGTE is able to place at least 300 storybooks in the hands of children whodo not have an opportunity to own a book of their own. With generous contributions from Owens-Illinois, United Way of Greater Toledo and a Ready to Lead in Literacy grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, WGTE works with local organizations and social service agencies to identify families and children who are income-eligible.

Representatives from the agencies who distribute books are required to be trained by station personnel on presenting the books, using the "view, read, do" method. There is an application process for organizations interested in receiving books. For information, contact Sally Brinkman at 419.380.4636 or sally_brinkman@wgte.org.

WGTE'S Ready To Read Program

The Ready to Read program at WGTE offers parents the skills to teach their children how to read and to emphasize the importance of reading every day. The program, aimed at parents with children age 8 and under, also provides books to children and families who most likely don't have books in their home.
