Toledo Symphony Brass Quintet

Trumpeter Lauraine Carpenter received her undergraduate degree in Music Education from Ithaca College and her Master of Arts degree in Performance from New York University. Lauraine is the Principal Trumpet with the Toledo Symphony and is Professor of Trumpet at the University of Toledo. She was a member of the San Jose and Oakland Symphonies from 1991-98 and held a one year position with the San Antonio Symphony during the 1996-97 season. Her musical resume includes an east cost tour with Robert Palmer, a national tour with San Francisco Symphony, and a big band engagement at the Casino in Monte Carlo. During the summer she is Principal Trumpet with the Cabrillo Music Festival for Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz, California.
Trumpeter Mel Harsh was born and raised in New Jersey; educated at the State University of New York, College at Fredonia, and The University of Michigan where he earned a Doctorate. He joined the Toledo Symphony in 1974 as a member of the trumpet section, and currently is the program annotator and lecturer for the Symphony.
Alan Taplin has been a member of the Toledo Symphony¹s horn section and brass quintet since 1981. He has been an arranger for the Symphony since 1980. Alan has performed with the Detroit Symphony, Louisville Orchestra and the Des Moines Metro Opera. Very active as a freelance/chamber musician in Ohio and Michigan, he has recorded commercially in Detroit, Chicago and Toledo. He has a Bachelor and Masters degree from the University of Michigan in horn performance, with minors in brass instruments, music theory and music history. He studied horn with Louis Stout and Harry Berv, composition with Leslie Bassett and orchestration/arranging with James Dapogny. He has served on the faculties of Olivet College, Concordia College, Heidelberg College, and currently teaches at the University of Toledo.
Dan Harris serves as the bass trombonist with the Toledo Symphony.
Tubist Ivan Hammond has been with the Toledo Symphony since 1977. He has been the tubist with L’Orchestre Symphonique de Québec and the North Carolina Symphony and performed with the American Symphony Orchestra League Summer Festival for many years. He holds degrees and a Performer’s Certificate from Indiana University and taught euphonium and tuba at Bowling Green State University for 30 years. He has performed hundreds of solo and chamber concerts and has had many pieces composed for him.
