Hailed as "one of the best Spanish pianists of our time" (Ritmo, Madrid,) Pedro Carboné first came into the spotlight when at age nineteen he performed Chopin’s Twenty-Four Etudes at the Palau de la Música in Barcelona. His recording of those works for RCA garnered excellent notices, placing it among the best ever made of the Chopin Etudes (Harmonie-Opéra, Paris.) His subsequent U.S. debut at the Kennedy Center was received enthusiastically by The Washington Post: "Mr. Carboné is a major artist...dynamics were imaginative...trills and turns had delectable grace." He has since performed throughout the U.S. to critical and audience acclaim and has been featured live repeatedly on National Public Radio’s nationwide broadcasts. His schedule for this season has taken him to the United States, Europe and Asia including orchestral appearances with the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt, the "George Enescu" Philharmonic of Bucharest and the Siberian National Symphony.
Heir to the finest Spanish musical tradition, which was passed on to him by his teachers Pilar Bayona and María Canals, Mr. Carboné’s interpretations of Albeniz’ Iberia Suite have been praised as “magnificent, impressive, with the right touch of expression” (ABC, Madrid.) In New York City he has appeared at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and Merkin Hall in recital and as soloist with the American Composers Orchestra and the Perspectives Ensemble, playing the music of Falla and Turina. His rendition of Falla’s Fantasia Baetica has earned him a reputation with the critics and his recording of Esplá’s complete piano works for Naxos/Marco Polo has also been highly praised by both Fanfare and the American Record Guide. An enthusiast of new music, Mr. Carboné premiered Ricardo Llorca’s Pieces for Piano and Orchestra with the Spanish Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra under Uwe Mund in Madrid. He is invited regularly to perform at the Juilliard School of Music as an authority on the Spanish pianorepertoire.
Pedro Carboné’s postgraduate studies were in the U.S. under Leon Fleisher and Eugene Istomin, and in Switzerland with Jean-Bernard Pommier. A remarkable pedagogue himself, Mr. Carboné is a member of the Faculty of the International Keyboard Festival at Mannes College of Music in New York. This season he has also given Master Classes at the Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Connecticut and the Beijing Central Conservatory.
