Program History
Fritz Byers, a volunteer host, conceived and developed this labor of love,
which first aired on April 1, 1989. The show has been on every Saturday
evening since that date - about 750 shows. Byers describes Jazz Spectrum
91 as "an anthology, a loose and flowing tour through the history
of the jazz music, showcasing the wondrous diversity of jazz and the virtuosity
of the musicians who play it. Jazz is marked, at once, by both limitless
innovation and enormous discipline, and it is this tension -- between the
individual and the group, between form and invention -- that makes jazz
such a source of boundless fascination. And joy!"
Please contribute to the support for Live Jazz on FM 91
WGTE Public Broadcasting is fundraising to expand live radio interviews and
performance of national and local jazz musicians on Jazz Spectrum 91. Musicians
will be invited to perform in the FM 91 Dana Performance Studios and be
interviewed by Fritz Byers during his Saturday evening Jazz Spectrum 91
programs. Donations are welcome the night of the event.
