Specific Television Underwriting Guidelines
Depiction of target populations: The use of people as consumers is permitted
where the purpose is to depict representatively of the target populations
for whom the funder’s products or services are intended.
For example:
•A financial services company could show a family home, dad mowing
the lawn, the kids playing with the dog, and mom waving to a neighbor, etc.,
while an announcer says, “Dean-Witter Financial Services, helping families
help themselves. We measure success one investor at a time.”
Additional guidelines:
•Use of 800 Numbers and Web Addresses: Funding credits may include
a toll-free 800 number (or the underwriter’s regular business telephone
number), or a World Wide Web address. The use of both simultaneously is prohibited
to minimize clutter and audience confusion.
•
The telephone number may not spell out a call to action or a comparative
or qualitative claim such as 1-800-CALL NOW, and the number must appear
in conjunction with the underwriter’s name or logo over a neutral
background, it may appear in video only, and it may appear on the screen
for no more than five (5) seconds.
•There may be no calls to action in the voice-over announcement (e.g., “Be
sure to call us right now!”).
•WGTE’s on-air production staff will provide the setting or
background over which the underwriter’s name, logo, products, or other
information may be displayed. WGTE will create a uniform background and announcer
voice for all shared underwriter credits.
