Who was Dana Reeve and what was her involvement in The New Medicine?
Ms. Reeve was wife to actor Christopher Reeve, mother to 13-year old son Will, actress, and activist. After a devastating accident that paralyzed her husband, Ms. Reeve worked as a loving caretaker and tireless advocate for stem cell research. In August 2005, Ms, Reeve, a non-smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer. After a valiant battle, Ms. Reeve died on March 6, 2006.
One of Ms. Reeve's last professional efforts was hosting the PBS special The New Medicine. Her performance was taped in November 2005, when she was between chemotherapy treatments. She was hopeful about her future, and dedicated to the project.
What types of treatments did Ms. Reeve seek for her illness?
It is important to note that Ms. Reeve sought "traditional" or allopathic treatment for her illness, including chemotherapy. She also strongly valued open communication with her health care practitioners, and relied upon hope and humanity throughout her experience with lung cancer.
