This year is WGTE TV 30's 50th anniversary of broadcasting educational, enlightening and entertaining programs that enrich our community. It has been a remarkable year, thus far, and promises more good things in the months ahead.
WGTE helmed an exciting statewide initiative called HUNTING FOR EVERYDAY HISTORY that consisted of three daytime interactive broadcasts and a final primetime program. The television programs featured students from all over the state of Ohio who discovered, researched and presented significant historical artifacts from our state's history.
New local/regional documentaries included YOUNG AT ART, a look at art education in the public schools and METROPARKS OF THE TOLEDO AREA, which explored our region's beautiful and recreational parks system during their 75th anniversary year.
WGTE has continued production of THE EDITORS, a weekly news and information program hosted by Tom Walton and Marilou Johanek of the Toledo Blade newspaper, and launched BUSINESS NOW, a weekly report on the current and future state of business and economic development in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.
TV 30 viewers became more connected to our community through outreach initiatives inspired by the TV programs presented on WGTE. Events this year included a "Be More Inspired" gardening tour and workshop in conjunction with the Toledo Botanical Garden; our on-going successful WGTE Book Club that watches MASTERPIECE THEATRE presentations and then reads the books upon which the programs are based; we are currently offering a major community health-awareness initiative that connects people to community groups, resources and information; and once again this year our ZOOM INTO ACTION project will encourage student volunteerism.
An exciting year is ahead as WGTE begins our transition to digital broadcasting, soon to offer primetime programs in High Definition viewing quality and to explore broadcasting a variety of program channel options during the day.
The Fall brings many new programs to you and WGTE. New episodes of TV's most watched science and history programs like NOVA, and NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, KEN BURNS AMERICAN STORIES, and ANTIQUES ROADSHOW.
New shows you won't want to miss include: THE BLUES, FIND! and an all new design and construction project on THIS OLD HOUSE.
I hope you will join us for the very best that television has to offer - for you, your family and our community. Let's make sure we continue to learn and grow together for the next 50 years.
