With more and more schools utilizing iPads and other wireless slates to enhance learning in K-12 classrooms, the demand for high quality professional development is growing€and the WGTE ERC responds!

The ERC team has been busy providing professional development to area schools to support the successful integration of these mobile devices.Springfield Local is one district that has taken advantage of this program. "Through the integration of technology into our Title 1 program, it has enabled our teachers to provide a hands-on interactive approach to providingmeaningful intervention that reinforces the skills taught by our teachers," says Todd Cramer, Assistant Superintendent of Springfield Local Schools. Dr. Cramer explains they will soon be expanding the use of iPads as the results of iPad integration have proven to be "a cost effective way to reinforce classroom instruction andensurestudents are provided with multiple modalities throughout the school day."

While each program is tailored to meet specific needs of each school, the general format of the series includes an introduction class (provides an overview of basic iPad features, iTunes & Apps) and follow up content sessions which focus on subject-specific Apps and fostering 21st century skills. The multi-session approach allows for ongoing support to assist teachers while their instruction with the iPad evolves.

This series has given teachers the opportunity to discover how iPads can be creative, effective learning tools. Participating teachers receive iTunes gift cards to immediately begin using the iPads; creating a personalized, hands-on (and fun!) learning experience. Teachers learn how to use iPads to enhance existing lessons and support student learning outcomes. They explore how iPad Apps can be utilized to produce multimedia, organize resources and develop learning communities € which promotes continued exploration and idea sharing for using iPads in the classroom.
