Wednesday, May 22 at 9:00 p.m.
It convulses, it blazes, it sings. You know it as the sun.
Scientists know it as one of the most amazing physics laboratories in the universe.
It contains 99.9 percent of all the matter in our solar system and sheds hot plasma at nearly a million miles an hour. The temperature at its core is a staggering 27 million degrees Fahrenheit.
Now, with the help of new spacecraft and Earth-based telescopes, scientists are seeing the sun as they never have before and even re-creating in labs what happens at the very center of the sun. Their work will helps us understand aspects of the sun that have puzzled scientists for decades.

Wednesday, May 22 at 10:00 p.m.Discover a World War II survivor tale of lost U.S. soldiers and their unlikely rescuers.
In 1944, as war rages around the world, a U.S. bomber is hit by Japanese anti-aircraft fire. As the plane went down, the surviving crew ejected and parachuted into the wilderness. Pursued by the Japanese, the airmen were taken in and protected by members of the Dayak tribe -- the so-called "wild men of Borneo." Mainly told by Dan Illerich, the last surviving airman; the original Dayaks (pictured at left); and the Australian commandoes who helped get the airmen out, the true story transports viewers deep into the heart of Borneo at the height of the Second World War, revealing fantastic tales of survival, bravery and ingenuity.

Audra McDonald, whose voice Stephen Sondheim has hailed as "one of the glories of the American theater," is unparalleled in the breadth and versatility of her artistry as both a singer and an actress.
Many of the selections on McDonald's new album Go Back Home are by composers with whom she has long been associated (Adam Guettel, Michael John LaChiusa, Rodgers & Hammerstein and Sondheim, among others), while some songs, including the John Kander and Fred Ebb title track, are by names that are relatively new to her repertoire.

Sunday, May 26 at 7:00 p.m.
In the summer of 1944, a handpicked group of G.I.s landed in France to conduct a special mission.
Armed with truckloads of inflatable tanks, a massive collection of sound effects records, and more than a few tricks up their sleeves, they created a traveling road show of deception on the battlefields of Europe, with the German Army as their audience. From Normandy to the Rhine, the 1,100 men of the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, known as the Ghost Army, conjured up phony convoys, phantom divisions and make-believe headquarters to fool the enemy about the strength and location of American units. Every move they made was top secret, and their story was hushed up for decades after the war's end.
This remarkable tale of a top-secret mission that was at once absurd, deadly and amazingly effective is told through the stories of the veterans, many of whom — like fashion designer Bill Blass and painter Ellsworth Kelly — would go on to have illustrious careers in art, design and fashion.
Pictured above: A half-track outfitted with playback equipment and a 500-pound speaker with a range of 15 miles, used by the Ghost Army for sonic deception.

Detroit: the grand American city, built on industry, fair play and hard work.
Detroit was the birthplace of the middle class, an industrial utopia where anyone who worked hard enough could experience the American Dream.
Today, Detroit is on the brink of bankruptcy. In the past ten years, this iconic Midwestern city has lost 25 percent of its population and 50 percent of its manufacturing jobs. Local officials are in the midst of the most dramatic "downsizing" of an American city ever seen: demolishing thousands of homes, reconsolidating massive tracts of excess land, cutting basic services, and even encouraging Detroiters in the most marginal neighborhoods to move.
Detroiters who have stuck with the city are at the breaking point. Despite these desperate conditions, there is still an allure to Detroit artists; curious outsiders flock to the city in search of inspiration and opportunity.
The people of Detroit are not ready to give up on this place, where the spirit of loyalty, community and grit is not so easy to break. They are ready to create a radically new Detroit in a post-industrial America.

In the last episode, Peter Sagal travels to Iceland, where after the country's economic collapse, leaders decided to create a new constitution, looking to the U.S. Constitution for inspiration.
This prompts Sagal to consider why our own founding document has lasted more than 225 years. He looks at the systems that have kept the Constitution healthy — amendments, judicial interpretation, checks and balances — and also at the political forces that threaten to undermine the framers' vision: excessive partisanship leading to gridlock, money in politics and gerrymandering.

Tuesday, May 28 at 10:00 p.m.
When 13-year-old Kainat Soomro accused four men of gang rape, she risked everything: her reputation, her education and even her life.
In Pakistan, women and girls who allege rape are often more strongly condemned than their alleged rapists. Some are even killed by their own families. For this unforgettable documentary, filmmakers Habiba Nosheen and Hilke Schellmann spent years tracing one alleged rape victim's odyssey through Pakistan's flawed justice system — as well as her alleged rapists' quest to clear their names.
Through the lens of the protracted legal battle between Kainat and her alleged rapists, they explore cultural norms around female sexuality in Pakistan, the continued influence of the country's tribal justice system and the troubling procedural flaws in the country's formal court system.
We meet Kainat's parents, who stand by their daughter as things take a deadly turn for the family. Her father vows to "fight until Kainat gets justice."
We also meet the four men accused of Kainat's rape—whose families also vow to fight back. "There will be murders over this. Don't you read the newspapers?" one man's uncle tells Nosheen and Schellmann. "These things lead to a chain of murders."

Follow the manhunt, step-by-step, for the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings.
At 2:50 p.m. on April 15, two bomb blasts turned the Boston Marathon finish line from a scene of triumph to tragedy, leaving three dead, hundreds injured and a city gripped by heartbreak and terror.
Less than five days later, the key suspects were identified and apprehended, with one dead, the other in custody.
"Nova" follows the manhunt step-by-step, examining the role modern technology — combined with old-fashioned detective work — played in cracking the case. Given hundreds of hours of surveillance and bystander videos, how did agents spot the bad guys in a sea of spectators? Why couldn't facial recognition software I.D. the criminals? How much could bomb chemistry analysis, cell phone GPS, infrared imagery and crowd sourcing reveal about the secrets behind this horrific crime?
