Executive Director, Read For Literacy
Jim has been Executive Director of Read For Literacy since 2006.
Read for Literacy is Toledo’s volunteer literacy agency. The agency is the nation’s largest and lowest cost all volunteer literacy agency, with 1,350 volunteer tutors and readers. The agency provides adult basic literacy tutoring and English as a Second Language tutoring to 1,250 adults annually. In 2009 the agency launched the Creating Young Readers program, its first program with children. Through the CYR program volunteer readers read to the most literacy-challenged children on a one-to-one basis to enable them to enter kindergarten fully ready to learn to read.
Jim joined Read For Literacy after a career that included working at The Blade, the United Way, The Andersons and Medical Mutual of Ohio. Jim also co-founded and was for ten years a partner of the Toledo-based public relations and marketing firm of Funk/Luetke, Inc., now FLS Marketing.
Jim is a graduate of the University of Toledo, where he has also taught marketing classes. He has served on the boards of directors of the United Way of Greater Toledo, the Toledo Botanical Garden, the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo and St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church.
