Our year-round series of broadcasts feature live performances from the Metropolitan Opera, as well as productions from Lyric Opera of Chicago, LA Opera on Air, San Francisco Opera, and Houston Grand Opera.

    Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. (December through May)

    Launched in 1931, the Metropolitan Opera’s Saturday matinee broadcasts are the longest-running continuous classical music program in radio history. Margaret Juntwait is the series host, joined by commentator Ira Siff. Also, WGTE's own Brad Cresswell is regularly heard as host of the popular intermission feature, the Opera Quiz.

    Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. (May through July)

    Since its early days, Lyric Opera of Chicago has been regarded as one of the top three US opera companies, along with the Met and San Francisco.  Chicago boasts an opera company that's second to none, with a box office exceeding 100 percent of capacity each year for the last decade, thanks to subscribers who give their tickets back for resale when they cannot attend a performance.

    Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. (July through August)

    Hosted by Duff Murphy, the series features performances from LA Opera’s current season. In just a quarter-century of existence, LA Opera has become – under the leadership of general director Placido Domingo – the United States’ fourth largest opera company and “stands out as a newly important force in American opera,” according to Mark Swed in the Los Angeles Times.

    Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. (August through October)

    The second largest opera company in North America, San Francisco Opera was founded by Gaetano Merola in 1923. The radio broadcast series presents 10 operas from their past season, hosted by Elaine Warner and Dianne Nicolini. Performed in the War Memorial Opera House, their home since October 1932.
