Seeking Solutions for Senior Hunger
WGTE Public Media has joined forces with the Area Office on Aging of Northwest Ohio, Inc. to bring attention to the crisis of senior hunger in our community. Senior hunger and food insecurity are big problems nationwide and in our community. In Ohio, five percent of senior citizens are at risk of going hungry. More than 250,000 elderly Ohioans receive emergency food assistance. The risk of hunger is expected to grow 50 percent by 2015, while funding for food banks, senior programs and meal delivery is being slashed.
Our partners in this effort include ProMedica, the Andersons Inc. Charitable Foundation and Buckeye Community Health Plan. The initiative is a true multi-media awareness and engagement campaign, consisting of live TV Town Hall programs, TV public service announcements, a comprehensive Web site, radio announcements and community events.
- Television Programs
WGTE Public Media and the Area Office on Aging of Northwest Ohio, Inc. present a series of live Town Hall programs that focus on the problem of senior hunger in the Toledo area. Across the nation, older citizens are going hungry for a variety of reasons, including pride, financial strain and the burden of sheltering multiple generations of their family within their home, all of which rely on the senior's income.
