Toledo Stories: Making Sunshine

Roy and Georgette Engler of Maumee forever changed the lives of thousands of children born with developmental disabilities.
In the first half of the last century, children born with developmental disabilities had no advocates. Parents were encouraged to institutionalize such children, and society forgot about them.
That all changed in 1950 when the Englers, the parents of five developmentally disabled children, founded Sunshine Children's Home.
Sunshine created a loving and nurturing environment that pioneered modern, integrated care. A unique partnership with the Mennonite Church helped Sunshine grow into a nationally recognized facility with clients from all over the United States. Sunshine has since expanded its services in order to serve the growing needs of the community and greatly enhance the quality of each client's life.
