Deadline NOW: Reimagining America's Declining Cities
Friday, November 12, 2010
Since World War II, most of America's older manufacturing cities have gradually declined in both people and wealth. But perhaps none have been harder hit than Detroit. Free Press reporter John Gallagher may have some ideas. His new book, Reimagining Detroit: Opportunities for Redefining an American City, showcases the innovative community-building work happening in the city and focuses on what can be done to make Detroit leaner, greener, and more economically self-sufficient.
Joining Mr. Gallagher on this week's program is Professor Daniel Hammel, an associate professor in the department of Geography and Planning at the University of Toledo. He is an expert on what happens inside America's cities, especially when it comes to housing.
