Hidden in Plain Sight: The Great Black Swamp of Northwest Ohio

During the summer of 2014, an algal bloom appeared
in Lake Erie causing a water ban, which adversely affected more than half a
million people and made national news. To help the regional audience understand
the root of the issue and the relationship between the historical swamp ecology
and present-day water crisis, this segment takes the viewer through the
little-known ecologies of Northwestern Ohio, where a vast swamp once lived that
took on the important role of filtering the water and providing a unique
habitat to many species of wildlife. It explores what remains of the original 3
million acres of swamp through a modern lens of today’s crisis and find links
for how we can begin to solve the larger ecological issue of preserving clean
water and beyond.
