A successful career in manufacturing does not always begin with a four-year degree.

In this episode of On the Job: Toledo Region, Jay Carr joins host Sara Swisher to share how he advanced from an entry-level machine-shop position into production leadership.

STARTING AT THE ENTRY LEVEL

Jay began by cutting material, moving boxes and learning how a machine shop operated. An employer-sponsored apprenticeship gave him the opportunity to develop more advanced skills and take on greater responsibility.

Over time, he moved into CNC machining, supervision and production management.

MANUFACTURING IS A HIGH-TECH INDUSTRY

Today’s manufacturing careers combine hands-on work with advanced technology. Employees may work with CNC equipment, computer-aided design, 3D modeling, robotics and other specialized systems.

There are career paths in machining, welding, maintenance, production, quality control and leadership.

BUILDING SKILLS BUILDS OPPORTUNITY

Certifications, apprenticeships and technical training allow workers to continue adding skills throughout their careers. Each new skill can create opportunities for greater responsibility and higher pay.

Jay also explains that employers notice more than technical ability. Communication, confidence, teamwork and a willingness to learn can make a strong impression during an interview or shop tour.
