Earning a college degree is an important accomplishment, but it does not always come with a clear career roadmap.

In this episode of On the Job: Toledo Region, host Sara Swisher talks with Madison and Andrew about how internships, networking and real-world experience helped them move from college into their careers.

EXPERIENCE HELPS YOU FIND YOUR DIRECTION

Madison studied accounting at the University of Toledo and gained experience through an internship that led to a career in public accounting. After ten years, she used the skills she had developed to transition into banking.

Andrew studied economics and strategic communications at Miami University. By exploring internships in different industries, he learned what he wanted from a career and what he did not.

THE VALUE OF INTERNSHIPS

An internship does not have to lead directly to a permanent job to be worthwhile. It can help you explore an industry, build professional skills and understand what type of work environment fits you best.

Even an experience that shows you what you do not want can move you closer to the right path.

CONNECTIONS CREATE OPPORTUNITIES

Networking does not have to mean attending a large event and handing out business cards. It can begin with a conversation over coffee, a question for a mentor or an introduction from someone you already know.

Those relationships can provide advice, perspective and access to opportunities you may not find on your own.
