WGTE Public Media is proud to premiere the latest edition of its award-winning Toledo Stories documentary series, Monroe St. United, on Thursday, December 18, at 8:00 p.m. The 30-minute program celebrates the 200th anniversary of Monroe Street United Methodist Church (MSUMC), which has been at the center of religious life in Toledo since 1825.
A special preview screening of Monroe St. United will take place at WGTE Public Media, 1270 S. Detroit Ave., on Tuesday, December 9 at 7:00 p.m.
Monroe St. United takes viewers inside the walls of this vital Toledo institution and into the lives of the people it has touched, revealing stories of faith, justice and relentless love for community. The documentary highlights the inspiring work MSUMC has done and continues to do as a congregation and outreach ministry, benefiting countless families and individuals throughout the greater Toledo area.
“For 200 years, Monroe Street United Methodist has been doing God’s work in Toledo,” said Kevin Mulder, MSUMC’s 200th Anniversary Chair. “While we remember our past, we celebrate the present and envision our future. God’s work is not done, and neither is the work of this church. Monroe St. United embraces the past, present and future of MSUMC, and it is a truly amazing story of faith.”
The documentary also celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Monroe Street Neighborhood Center, an essential component of the church’s ministry. The Neighborhood Center’s mission is to partner with the greater community to feed the hungry, strengthen and enrich families, promote physical fitness to seniors and provide high-quality housing to community members in financial need.
Monroe St. United is the latest installment of WGTE’s Toledo Stories, which has been honoring and documenting the people, places and moments that have shaped the character of northwest Ohio for over 20 years.
“This program honors the legacy of Monroe Street United Methodist Church and shows how the church’s mission continues to shape the community today,” said Shane Potgieter, Executive Producer of Monroe St. United. “For two centuries, MSUMC has been a steady light in a city that’s seen hardship and hope, meeting people where they are and walking beside them through every chapter of life.”
