Throughout February, WGTE TV and FM 91 have a full slate of programming that represents history, heritage and hope both across the country and right here in Toledo. Please join us all month long for this special celebration of Black History Month.

Harriet Tubman: Visions of Freedom 
Go beyond the legend and meet the inspiring woman who repeatedly risked her own life and freedom to liberate others from slavery. 

Beginning Tuesday, February 3, 9 p.m.
Black and Jewish in America: An Interwoven History

Henry Louis Gates Jr. hosts his four-part series tracing the rich, complex relationship between Black and Jewish Americans – defined by their solidarity and strained by division. Drawn together by racism and antisemitism, they forged civic and cultural bonds, especially during the civil rights era.

Toledo Stories: The Tatum Legacy

Discover one of the greatest improvisers in jazz history, Toledo piano legend Art Tatum. Although he was born nearly blind, Art Tatum's artistic vision changed jazz forever – and will be felt for generations to come.

Toledo Stories: Cornerstones – The African Americans

African Americans came to Toledo seeking freedom. Although they were denied many opportunities, they were determined to be part of this modern, industrialized city. They energized Toledo by building their own churches, business and institutions. Celebrate the lives and the legacy of community leaders like Ella P. Stewart and Art Tatum.

Becoming Frederick Douglass 
Discover how a man born into slavery became one of the most influential voices for democracy in American history. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Stanley Nelson explores the role Douglass played in securing the right to freedom for African Americans.

Toledo Stories: Undefeated – The Chuck Ealey Story

Chuck Ealey piloted the University of Toledo Rockets to a perfect 35-0 record as the starting quarterback and established one of the greatest records in collegiate football history - a record that remains standing today.

Independent Lens: The Inquisitor 

The Inquisitor traces Barbara Jordan’s rise from Texas congresswoman to national icon, highlighting her powerful voice, integrity, and influence on U.S. politics – while revealing the private struggles behind her public strength.
