The Red String Radio Hour

Red String LogoWhat are the hidden connections between Philip Glass and the Doors?
Tom Waits and Mel Torme?
Frédéric Chopin and Frank Zappa?
Elvis Costello and the Grateful Dead?

The Red String Radio Hour ties it all together, as host Eric Klinger explores the complex connections that link songs and musicians, using the cork board displays beloved by conspiracy theorists and TV detectives to reveal just how tangled up musical genres — jazz, rock, classical, blues and more — really are.

Each week, The Red String Radio Hour starts with one song, chosen more or less at random, then traces the connections that song has to other songs and other artists in unexpected ways. Along the way, Eric shares some of the lore surrounding the music and the people who make it.

Tune in to FM 91 each Wednesday beginning April 8 at 7 p.m. for new episodes.

About the Host

Red String EricFor host Eric Klinger, The Red String Radio Hour combines two of his great loves — music and looking things up.

Eric has spent decades listening to all types of music, and he's been an avid reader of liner notes the entire time. Over the years, music has been a constant in his life, as a working musician, a record store owner and a music writer, and he brings his passion and his knowledge to the project.

The ‘red string’ in the title refers to the cork board displays beloved of conspiracists and detective shows, and Eric's goal for the show is to share the ways in which music is connected in ways we might not always expect. Along the way, he aims to point out the important role that Ohio (especially northwest Ohio) has played in shaping music.
