Making Sunshine

Children born with developmental disabilities had no advocates in the first half of the 20th century. Parents were encouraged to institutionalize such children, and society forgot about them. That all changed in 1950 when Roy and Georgette Engler, the parents of five developmentally disabled children, founded Sunshine Children's Home. Sunshine created a loving and nurturing environment that pioneered modern, integrated care. A unique partnership with the Mennonite Church helped Sunshine grow into a nationally recognized facility with clients from all over the United States. Sunshine has since expanded its services in order to serve the growing needs of the community and greatly enhance the quality of each client's life.
